How God\u2019s People Rejoice While Their Enemies Perish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The word\u00a0<em>hallelujah<\/em>\u00a0appears only four times in the New Testament. That might seem surprising to churches and individuals that use the word often. But perhaps most surprising of all is the occasion of those six verses. In fact, one is especially challenging, if not repulsive, to our modern sentiments.<\/p>\n<p>In Revelation 19:1\u20136,\u00a0<em>hallelujah<\/em>\u00a0is the refrain of the saints in heaven. Why are they saying \u201challelujah\u201d? because they\u2019re rejoicing over the destruction of the wicked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOW WE SEE DIMLY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How many of us today can barely stomach the thought of divine judgment\u2014particularly\u00a0<em>final<\/em>\u00a0judgment? Among those who claim the name of Christ, we may genuinely believe the Bible and acknowledge the reality and justice of God\u2019s wrath and an eternal hell. But, if we\u2019re honest, we often try to avoid the subject. We may, in a way,\u00a0<em>tolerate<\/em>\u00a0God\u2019s judgment, but our instinct is to turn away. We don\u2019t\u00a0<em>like<\/em>\u00a0it. We may be a touch embarrassed by it. We plainly don\u2019t think of hell as a reason for God\u2019s people to\u00a0<em>rejoice<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Elements of this impulse are right and good. God doesn\u2019t mean for the idea of hell to be pleasant. Hell is horrible beyond description.
