You can read Part 1 here: <a href=\"https:\/\/rpmministries.org\/2021\/01\/a-tale-of-two-passages\/\"><em>A Tale of Two Passages<\/em><\/a>. In Part 1, we focused on 2 Corinthians 1:8-9a. Notice that I say \u201c9a.\u201d We purposefully dropped off the conversation before the second half of the verse\u2014so we could focus our attention on the depth of Paul\u2019s suffering. Paul would say, \u201cSuffer deeply and honestly.\u201d We tend to say, \u201cSuffer well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <strong>If I Hear \u201cSuffer Well\u201d One More Time, I May Become Ill\u2026<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve heard the phrase \u201csuffer well\u201d in the biblical counseling world once, then you\u2019ve likely heard it a few 100 times. When I hear it, here\u2019s what I hear:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cSuffer well. Buck up! God works all things together for good. Quit the pity party. Don\u2019t you know you can and should hope in God!? Deny your feelings. Faith matters, not feelings. Grow up. Stop complaining. Be happy. Count your blessings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I fear that \u201csuffer well\u201d has become an evangelical code word for \u201cstop feeling!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But biblically, \u201csuffer well\u201d is much more complex. Much richer. More robust.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>\u201cSide\u201d One of Suffering Well: Lament<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuffer well\u201d as modeled by the Apostle Paul includes<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We \u201csuffer well\u201d when we first lament deeply.
