The year was 1898, and the pastor called his church to repent of its hypocrisy. He said:<\/p>\n<p>The pulpit should be a tower of strength to every weak cause. Women should hasten to church, saying\u2014Our cause will be upheld there. Homeless little children should speed to the sanctuary, saying\u2014We will be welcomed there. Slaves running away should open the church door with certainty of hospitality.\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/katie\/Google%20Drive\/Editorial\/Journal\/March%202021\/March%202021%20Journal%20.docx#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Grimk\u00e9\u2019s point is simple: society\u2019s lowly should find solace in the church.<\/p>\n<p>Is this true in your own life? Is this true in your church? Do you associate with the lowly?<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHO ARE THE LOWLY?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLowly,\u201d for the purpose of this article, refers to societal outcasts. The lowly are those upon whom society frowns.\u00a0<em>In-groups\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>out-groups<\/em>\u00a0are nothing new. By the time a child arrives in middle school, she discovers an entire caste system. From the schools to the streets, from the backrooms to the board rooms, from the neighborhoods to the nations: you are either\u00a0<em>in<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>out.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Outcasts change according to our time and place. In Jesus\u2019 day, there were a number of outcasts with whom he boldly associated:<\/p>\n<p>  Ethnic Outcasts:\u00a0Jesus speaks of a\u00a0<em>good<\/em>\u00a0Samaritan and shows kindness<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Who are the outcasts in your community?
