What Does the Bible Teach?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>No, \u201cGod Helps Those Who Help Themselves\u201d<\/strong><strong> Is <em>Not<\/em> in the Bible<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>When I was in high school, my wrestling coach, knowing I was a Christian, would try to motivate me to practice harder by saying (yelling):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cBobby, you know that \u2018God helps those who help themselves.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I wanted to correct him, but this was back in the 1970s when coaches could and would be pretty brutal and harsh. But after about the 3rd or 4th time, I said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cYou know, Coach, that\u2019s not in the Bible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was shocked. He said, \u201cShow me!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cI can\u2019t show you, because it\u2019s not in there. But I can show you that the Bible teaches the opposite\u2014\u2018God helps those who admit they are helpless\u2026\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, my coach was not alone. According to a 1998 Barna research poll, 82% of the general population believes \u201cGod helps those who help themselves\u201d is in the Bible. But take heart, Christians know better. According to the same poll, only 81% of Christians surveyed believe that \u201cGod helps those who help themselves\u201d is in the Bible.
