Red Pen or Yellow Highlighter?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong> <\/p>\n

When you\u2019re reading something from someone \u201coutside your group,\u201d are you a \u201cred pen\u201d person, or are you a \u201cyellow highlighter\u201d person?<\/p>\n

A \u201cred pen\u201d person is like the teacher who gets out their red pen to mark up all the mistakes, errors, edits, problems, and wrong ideas a student has.<\/p>\n

A \u201cyellow highlighter\u201d person is like the learner who gets out their yellow highlighter to emphasize all the good points, novel ideas, wise thoughts, and good points of another person\u2019s perspective.<\/p>\n

Our Tendency: \u201cYes, but.\u201d Or, \u201cOh, no!\u201d Or, \u201cHmm, interesting\u2026\u201d<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Our tendency when reading or listening to someone from \u201coutside our camp,\u201d is to approach what they say through a critical, corrective lens, confrontive, or combative lens.<\/p>\n

Sometimes our mindset is, \u201cThis person is the enemy<\/em>. They are wrong. They need<\/em> my corrective wisdom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Often our mindset is not even, \u201cYes, but\u2026\u201d Because a \u201cyes-but\u201d mindset at least stops long enough to discern the \u201cyes\u201d\u2014to see something positive to emphasize with my yellow highlighter.<\/p>\n

No. Our approach is often, \u201cOh, no!\u201d Or, \u201cNo way!\u201d Perceiving the person as \u201cthe enemy outside our camp,\u201d we perceive that our only role is \u201ctruth-teller.\u201d We see<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
