{"id":64527,"date":"2023-08-29T13:56:30","date_gmt":"2023-08-29T18:56:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biblicalcounselor.com\/?p=64527"},"modified":"2023-08-29T14:17:41","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T19:17:41","slug":"the-sufficiency-of-scriptures-and-the-use-of-biblical-counseling-training-materials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biblicalcounselor.com\/?p=64527","title":{"rendered":"The Sufficiency of Scriptures and the Use of Biblical Counseling Training Materials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A Great Question<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>Someone recently asked me a great question:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cIf we believe in the sufficiency of Scripture, then why use biblical counseling training materials?<\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p> <strong>The Sufficiency of Scripture for Biblical Counseling<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>This question arose after I posted the following comment on my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/1706641682951424\/\">Facebook <em>Gospel-Centered Counseling and Equipping <\/em>group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cSince we are committed to the sufficiency of Scripture, no person\u2019s books on biblical counseling, not mine, not Jay Adams\u2019s, not David Powlison\u2019s, are\u00a0<strong>necessary<\/strong>. Potentially\u00a0<strong>helpful<\/strong>, yes, just like the writings from the history of Christian soul care are helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cAnother way to say this: <em>no person\u2019s interpretation of Scripture is sufficient; no person\u2019s model of biblical counseling is sufficient<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <strong>The Sufficiency of Scripture and Biblical Counseling Training Materials<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s my response to the good question about why we use <strong>human-authored<\/strong> training materials if we believe in the sufficiency of Scripture.<\/p>\n<p>Most of <a href=\"https:\/\/rpmministries.org\/books\/\">my 24 books<\/a> are designed to train biblical counselors, so I do believe in <a href=\"https:\/\/rpmministries.org\/bookstore\/equipping-biblical-counselors-a-guide-to-discipling-believers-for-one-another-ministry\/\">training materials<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, I would <strong>not<\/strong> want anyone to say,\u00a0<em>&#8220;I am of Bob Kellemen.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0Nor to say,\u00a0<em>&#8220;I am a David Powlison.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0Or,\u00a0<em>&#8220;I am of Jay Adams.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Just like Paul in 1 Corinthians 1:12 did <strong>not<\/strong> want anyone saying, \u201cI follow Paul. I follow Apollos.
