I have observed it in myself and I have observed it in others. It\u2019s the tendency to turn quickly from what the Bible <em>does<\/em> command to what it <em>does not<\/em>, from the plainest sense of one of God\u2019s directions to a list of exceptions or exclusions. It\u2019s the tendency to hear what God says and immediately reply, \u201cYeah, but\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also,\u201d Jesus says. Yeah, but you don\u2019t really mean that in any sense but the metaphorical, right? Surely I shouldn\u2019t actually allow myself to be harmed without mounting a strong defense. Surely I shouldn\u2019t actually suffer unjustly without some kind of recourse or retaliation?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLove your enemies.\u201d Yeah, but they are your enemies too and they are doing harm to your people and your church. I\u2019m sure you don\u2019t mean for me to actually love them. What if I just pray for them and leave it at that?
