One way to summarize God\u2019s design for sex is to say that He created sex to be God-centered and other-focused. Ultimately, God created sex to teach us about Himself (see: Eph 5:31-32). In that way, sex is God-centered. But in order to learn and experience what God intends to reveal through sex, our engagement in it must not be self-focused but other-focused\u2014that is, focused on the pleasure, joy, and fulfillment of our spouse. The problem is, this kind of selfless motivation doesn\u2019t come naturally to us. We all come to sex captivated by our own desires and seeking our own pleasure. There may be a myriad of factors that contribute to our sexual struggles, but the fundamentally selfish nature of our desires is undeniably one of them. None of us comes to sex with selfless motives.
