Enjoying Good Gifts from a Good Father

My four-year-old and I were sitting at the breakfast table a few days ago when he looked up from his bowl of Cheerios and gravely declared, “Daddy, Christmas is the day we get presents.” He’s been eyeing the ever-growing stack of Amazon boxes piling up in our living room, eagerly awaiting the moment he gets to dig in. When I look at my little guy, I see a boy who is excited to get new toys. And it’s good for him to be excited to get new toys. Toys are fun. Toys take him to another world. God’s Feelings and Mine: Divine Impassibility and Anger in Counseling

One challenge of being a biblical counselor is that my job brings me into contact almost daily with things that make me angry. Cruel husbands make me angry. Unrepentant, self-righteous voyeurism makes me angry. Seeing harm done to children makes me angry. And, as a biblical counselor, I often deal with individuals who are angry. While often they are consumed with sinful anger, other times the people I meet with are angry about legitimate matters: being lied to, betrayed, assaulted, or rejected.
