I wrote Engagement: Preparing for Marriage to address two problems: First, it seems like our culture doesn’t really know what to make of marriage anymore. There was a time, perhaps not too long ago, when this wasn’t a major problem. Marriage was largely defined by the church and modeled for the next generation (however imperfectly) by mothers and fathers who remained together for their whole lives. Because marriage is so important to God, it faces many challenges from sinful man, a fallen universe, and the Enemy. The radical upheaval of sexual morality and the increasing permissiveness of divorce are just two examples from recent history.
