Courageous Love in the Face of Fear

Fear can make us do curious things. On the one hand, it compels us toward self-protection as we order our days to guard against threats of various kinds. On the other hand, knowing that defense against every fear is an impossible standard to attain, we worry in proportion to the weight of our concerns. Regardless of whether we “know better,” what we fear drives our feelings and actions. Fear in relationships operates in like fashion. Because the human heart is drawn to the affirmations and approval of others, and because we often fear the reprisal and disapproval of people, we will orient our position in relationships to gain the greatest favor. We will only say what will please others and refrain from what may impact our perceived standing.
