The Trap of Comparison

We all compare ourselves to others. When we do so, we are robbed of joy. Why? Because one of two things happens. Either we feel inferior to the people of comparison—resulting in some combination of shame, covetousness, anger, anxiety, guilt, self-doubt, or self-hatred. Or we feel superior to the people of comparison—resulting in some combination of pride, self-righteousness, and judgmentalism. Either way, we’re left joyless. Instead of comparing ourselves to others, we must focus our eyes on the love of God, on our identity in Christ, and on sacrificially serving others in love.
