Domestic Abuse: Common Counseling Mistakes
Mistakes, missteps, and miscommunications will occur in counseling relationships. After all, regardless of training, skill, or experience, we are still fallen people walking alongside other fallen people. Most of us have stories of course-corrections in counseling due to any number of reasons, but when it comes to cases of domestic abuse, mistakes can be dangerous or even deadly. Don’t get me wrong; these mistakes will still occur. I am fond of reminding those I train, “There are no perfect interventions.” Cases of abuse are complex, involving victims, perpetrators, family, friends, bystanders, and, without a doubt, our own blind spots. We will never see a perfect domestic abuse response, but perhaps these two observations can help us conduct better interventions that glorify God and protect the vulnerable. Continue Reading →
