Book Review of Together Through the Storms: Biblical Encouragements for Your Marriage When Life Hurts by Jeff and Sarah Walton

Many biblical counselors use the discipleship river metaphor to explain the Christian life. The Christian life could be described as a river where the Christian disciple moves throughout various stages of the river toward maturation. The disciple enters the river through the stream of evangelism and travels down the river with a companion of disciples within the context of a local church. While the river inevitably has various sharp turns or rapids which disrupt the Christian life, a maturing Christian will progressively make his way down the river with the guidance and help of other believers. If the Christian life is described as a river, you could locate marriage in this analogy by considering the number of occupants on any particular raft. In marriage, the Christian husband and Christian wife occupy the same raft. Continue Reading →

Book Review of When Disability Hits Home by Paul Tautges with Joni Eareckson Tada

Paul Tautges did not intend to write a book on disability until a fateful trip to the Gospel Coalition national conference in April 2011. It was there that Paul met another father of multiple children with disabilities, John Knight of Desiring God ministries. Tautges is the father of ten kids, four of whom are affected by congenital hearing impairment, one of whom also has cognitive disabilities and autism. After a few hours of kindred conversation, Knight asked Tautges point-blank about writing a book on disability. When Disability Hits Home is the fruit of that conversation, many challenging days of parentings, and many years of preaching and teaching his church about the God who is present and near to the disabled. Book Review of Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers by Dane Ortlund

“Who is Jesus?” There are many ways to approach this question. You may begin to think about the various indicative statements scattered throughout Scripture concerning Jesus Christ. He is the Word, the Light of the World, the Bread of Life, the Good Shepherd, the Alpha and the Omega. Some may instinctively begin to explore His nature as fully God and fully man and His relations within the Trinity. Others may answer this question by considering what we learn about Him through His works—His incarnation, active obedience, substitutionary atonement, resurrection, ascension, and continual intercession for His people.
