Ancient Practice, New Paradigm: Returning Soul Care to the Body of Christ

Recently, I spoke at the ACBC National Conference, where the Puritans and their approach to pastoral care were on display—specifically, what we can learn from them in the context of biblical counseling. What a rich topic! The speakers did a great job. I was honored to be able to teach on a model I call “Biblical Soul Care®.” It has a rich history and tradition, but only recently, in my opinion, have we returned to the benefits of the practice. True Freedom Means More Than Breaking Out of Bondage

When many believers think of freedom in Christ, their first thought is what they are free from. Free from sin. Free from shame. Free from destructive habits, hang-ups, or strongholds that once held them captive. This kind of freedom is part of the “Good News”—and it’s worth celebrating! But that is not the whole story.

From Fruit to Root: A Biblical Diagnostic That Transforms Counseling

In biblical counseling, when someone comes in with a lot of situational stress, it’s easy to get caught treating surface symptoms—viewing what we see, hear, or even what the counselee believes as the main issue. Some call this the presenting problem. It’s not that it doesn’t matter, it’s that it is never the root issue. The wise counselor gets behind the fruit and draws out the heart (Prov. 20:5). Just like pruning a tree won’t cure root rot, modifying behavior won’t lead to lasting heart change. That’s why I’ve used and trained others to apply a tool we called the Fruit to Root Diagnostic. It’s a simple yet profound biblical framework that helps uncover not just what’s happening in a person, but why it’s happening, so we can bring lasting transformation through the gospel. You may have seen something like it, but I think this simplified version can also be used by caregivers such as small group leaders and mentors. Continue Reading →
