The Counseling Component of Conspiracy Theories
The spread of the Coronavirus and the associated measures and restrictions are now affecting us for a second year. The pandemic has impacted almost all areas of congregational life: Here in Germany, church services, Bible studies, and small groups must be celebrated under significantly changed conditions and restrictions. In many cases, Bible clubs, youth groups, and work among seniors have come to a complete standstill. Yet, maybe even more challenging have been the different opinions on Covid and the protective measures enacted by our governments. The spectrum of thought in our churches is usually as broad as it is in the wider community. Some have developed an unreasonable fear of the virus and its potential consequences on our health. In contrast, others see nothing more than a malicious conspiracy theory, driven by some ominous power. Without question, the anxiety and fear bred in this climate are familiar counseling issues.
