Faithful Admonishing in a Culture of Tolerance According to 1 Thessalonians 5:14

If I have heard a consistent critique of biblical counseling during the 18 years I have been in the movement, it would be the caricature around admonishment. The critique is nearly always explained along the lines of biblical counseling only seeking to trace all the struggles people have back to sin and correct it quickly. This is why the biblical call to admonish is seen as harsh, graceless, and unloving. Biblical counselors, in some ways, might have earned this, and in a culture of tolerance, a critique like this might really test one’s obedience to walking out how God calls us to pursue other believers. A true biblical understanding of God’s heart in admonishment is one of the most loving methods of pursuit He calls us to. Understanding God’s heart in admonishment will help us remain faithful to His Word in caring for His people. True Hope in Battling Fear: A Lesson from Psalm 3

I often use the Psalms in my own abiding relationship with the Lord and in my counseling ministries. They do such a good job helping us rightly identify and orient our emotions and feelings. Our culture tends to swing between venting feelings/emotions regardless of the consequence and a stuffing stoicism. Both extremes are wrong and damaging to the soul. The Psalms teach us how to pray our emotions and feelings to God. They teach us to reverently and reflectively pour them out before the Lord and process them through His perfect insights.
