The Grace of Confession According to Psalm 32

There are times during the biblical counseling process when areas of a counselee’s doctrinal or biblical confusion become apparent. There are certainly all kinds of reasons for this. Discerning where the confusion comes from and how it has or is affecting their walk with Christ and their community with other believers becomes an important part of the soul care process.

One such area of theological confusion is the biblical mandate of confession. More specifically, a misunderstanding of God’s heart in calling people to confession. This is why it is often misunderstood and neglected by many Christians. Psalm 32 gives a detailed picture of what biblical confession really entails. The grace of confession ushers in God’s mercy, forgiveness, and freedom from sin that we desperately need. Equipping counselees with an accurate understanding of confession is crucial for spiritual growth. Continue Reading →

The Interplay of Desires and Emotions According to Proverbs

The book of Proverbs has been a go-to on many occasions over my years as a biblical counselor and pastor. Faithful Admonishing in a Culture of Tolerance According to 1 Thessalonians 5:14

If I have heard a consistent critique of biblical counseling during the 18 years I have been in the movement, it would be the caricature around admonishment. The critique is nearly always explained along the lines of biblical counseling only seeking to trace all the struggles people have back to sin and correct it quickly. This is why the biblical call to admonish is seen as harsh, graceless, and unloving. Biblical counselors, in some ways, might have earned this, and in a culture of tolerance, a critique like this might really test one’s obedience to walking out how God calls us to pursue other believers. A true biblical understanding of God’s heart in admonishment is one of the most loving methods of pursuit He calls us to. Understanding God’s heart in admonishment will help us remain faithful to His Word in caring for His people. In 1 Thessalonians 5:14, we are given an amazing picture of what God’s call is to every believer in caring for each other. Continue Reading →
