Francis Schaeffer once wrote a small but profound book entitled The Mark of a Christian. In it, he addressed various cultural issues as well as how we, the Church, should aspire to relate to one another as we navigate differences among us. Schaeffer’s thoughts on these matters were written through the lens of Jesus’ prayer just prior to His arrest. It is a familiar prayer of our Lord wherein He implores the Father, “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me” (John 17:20-23). For Schaeffer, this was his final apologetic to the world—that God’s people would be most known by the love they openly express to one another so that the world would know Jesus was who He claimed to be—the One sent by the Father.
