Consider the Senses When Planning Counseling Spaces (Part One)
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a function-over-fashion guy. Those who have only seen me at public events might be skeptical, but this truth is readily evident to anyone who spends time with me in more personal settings, especially if my wife, Jenny, is away. The obvious reason is my wife picks the majority of my wardrobe. Thankfully, she no longer needs to dress me every day. Seventeen years of marriage have taught me a few fashion lessons. But let’s be honest; some of us are aesthetically inclined, and others are more utilitarian. In the past few years, I’ve noticed how this dichotomy is evident in counseling spaces. For some of us, the only consideration for office space is whether or not it will work. Is there a place for a few people to sit? Is there a surface to write on? A whiteboard to draw on?
