Toxic empathy is disorienting. On one occasion, when my anguish over the suffering of others flooded out to a friend, she said, “Who died and gave you a Junior God badge?” Gulp. My emotional response to suffering in the lives of other people had unmoored me from biblical bearings. I was adrift in a sea of sorrow and was overwhelmed. Empathy is a good gift that can go terribly wrong:
